Vigneaud was an American biochemist who studied at the University of Illinois and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine before becoming Professor of Biochemistry at Cornell University Medical School. "Du Vigneaud was awarded the 1955 Nobel Prize for Chemistry 'for his work on biochemically important sulfur compounds, and especially for the first synthesis of a polypeptide hormone'." Wasson, p. 277. These papers include a number of studies, made during WWII, on the synthesis of penicillin, and include Vigneaud's significant contributions to the study of sulfur compounds.
