Hyacinthe Vincent (1862-1950), médecin militaire, microbiologiste et épidémiologiste, revient ici sur quelques principes fondamentaux liés au vaccin de la fièvre typhoïde, qu'il mit au point en France en 1910, en association avec André Chantemesse : il insiste sur "l'efficacité protectrice que l'on doit exiger d'un vaccin", qui doit passer, selon lui, par la "méthode de stérilisation des bacilles par l'action de l'éther". Rendu obligatoire dans l'Armée française par la loi du 28 mars 1914, ce triple vaccin à l'éther (éthérovaccin), à la fois contre la fièvre typhoïde et contre les fièvres paratyphoïdes A et B, avait pratiquement fait disparaître tous les cas d'affections typhoïdiques durant la guerre de 1914-1918. Hyacinthe Vincent reçut l'hommage des maréchaux Joffre et Foch. L'auteur est connu principalement pour ses travaux sur l'angine ulcéro-membraneuse, la fièvre typhoïde et la gangrène gazeuse. Entre 1924 et 1936, il fut titulaire de la nouvelle chaire d'épidémiologie au Collège de France. Il dirigeait un laboratoire au Val-de-Grâce.
