Twofollow-ups of the original sample, first in hi…ghschool and then in college, showed that the number ofseconds that preschoolers were able to delaygratification significantly predicted diversesocial-cognitive outcomes years later.Impressed by these longitudinal findings, DanielGoleman, a science writer at New York Times,popularized this concept as an aspect of SocialIntelligence and Emotional Intelligence. I was giventhe opportunity to study the original Bing samplewhile I was a graduate student at UC Berkeley.Most of the original participants are now enteringinto middle adulthood and many of them have childrenof their own. This book reports new findings linkingdelay of gratification to new outcomes in laterstages of life. The primary contribution of this workis that it extends the stability of delay ofgratification from preschool to 40 years of age. Inaddition, my work proposes an instrument to measureadults ability to delay gratification.
