Bound in green paper covered boards with a gilt embossed shield to the front board. Upper edges gilt.Rough cut pages with several unopened pages. The spine of the book is significantly faded and there is a bump to the tail of the spine and the head of the spine is a little turned in with light associated rubbing. Some light rubbing/mottling to the boards. Light toning to the end papers and a former owners ink name to the title page, including place and date 1919. The textblock is very clean and tight. Original full calf leather; front joint splitting with board tenuously attached; rear board is firm; both boards rubbed and scuffed with corners well worn; spine ends worn with head peeling back from underlying quires; surface chip (H 3.5cm x L 1.5cm) near spine heel; spine's black title label retains bright gilt lettering with horizontal gilt bars having some flaking and loss particularly those at the spine ends. Pencil signatures of "Tam Brownrigg" on front pastedown, front free endpaper (along with Latin pencil notes in similar hand), and again on concluding page 106 of Index. Foldout frontispiece map worn along fore-edge from not being correctly re-folded at original fold-line so that edge protrudes past that of text block. Pages 157-182 pulled. Mostly light to occasionally mild foxing/toning to interior leaves which, overall, remain quite clean. Text block still firmly bound. Separately paged Index at rear with title "Clavis Virgiliana: Or a Vocabulary of all the words in Virgil's Bucolics Georgics, and Aeneid . . . " Exceptionally scarce mid-19th century Columbus, Mississippi silver bookseller ticket for Frierson & Teasdale at front pastedown's top right corner. A fair antiquarian copy. OCLC cites Joseph Allen-Philadelphia imprints for 1831, 1834, 1838, 1839 but, as no publishing date is provided upon the title page, this edition should date from the mid-1840s to mid-1850s per the binding and paper as well as local research indicating that bookseller/stationer Frierson & Teasdale was operating after 1850. (The bookseller ticket shares a faint tone line with the front pastedown caused by the overlapping underlying leather which seems to indicate that the ticket's age is commensurate with the book itself.) The book also enjoys a long Southern provenance per the aforementioned ownership signatures of Tam Brownrigg. Moving from North Carolina, General Richard Thomas Brownrigg (1793-1847) settled in Columbus, Mississippi in 1835 and established a 2000 acre cotton plantation and constructed a manor house, Temple Heights, which still stands today. General Brownrigg had seven children including Thomas "Tam" John Brownrigg who reached the rank of captain in the Confederate Army 9th Battalion Mississippi Sharpshooters. Exterior is VERY GOOD+. Square spine, firm hinges and joints, corners fairly sharp. Rubbed boards, joints and extremities. Slight rubbing on spine. Most of the stain has faded away from the fore-edge and top edge; most still visible on the bottom edge. Interior - VG. Trimmed pages. Darkened endpapers and text block, toned pages. Foxing is light overall with some sporadic heavier foxed pages, more moderate foxing to first few and last few pages of book. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, the President of the Imperial Dante Society of Great Britain and the First Vice President of the London Dante Society. He bequeathed two portraits of Dante to the British Museum. He was a fervent collector of high-end collectibles, including an extensive collection of fine art and over 8,000 rare books. CONDITION REPORT Square spine, firm hinges and joints, tight pages, professionally reinforced hinges. Top of text block closely trimmed to text. Text complete - though missing title page for the Bucolics. The Aeneid title page was relocated to the front of the book, immediately preceding the Bucolics, during the rebind. A few pages misnumbered by the printer. Endpapers and blanks refreshed during 17th century rebind. Spine professionally restored and recased with 17th century spine relaid. The book is the survivor of a fire - blackened and charred spine with some missing leather, board top edge and fore-edge blackened with some charring. Top text block edge blackened. Corners bumped. Some small water dampening to endpapers and in a few other spots. Foxing and a few small spots of writing on endpapers. Some light to sporadic foxing throughout text, a bit heavier on first few and last few pages. A few areas of contemporary marginalia, mostly faded to illegibility over the centuries. No signs of worming. One slightly bent page corner; one slightly trimmed. Signs of handling - some ink splats, a few smudges and page creases. Lightly toned pages. Front paste down with Richard C.
