The author was born to a poor sharecropping family that moved to Iowa in 1941 where her father found wartime employment at the John Deere Tractor Company. Virginia attended integrated Iowa public schools where little attention was paid to her skin color. At 17 she fell in love with and married a young neighbor, Don Perkins, whose ability to kick, pass, run, and throw had earned him a football scholarship at the University of New Mexico. Now a bride, relocated to the southwestern city of Albuquerque, and anticipating motherhood, there were many lessons for Virginia to learn. When her husband became a star running back with the Dallas Cowboys, Virginia had to cope with celebrity spouse syndrome; and when her marriage fell apart she endured the agony of an unwanted divorce. Coming to terms with the necessity of establishing her own emotional stability and bolstered, as always, by her love of God and family, Virginia discovered business talents she wasn't even aware she had. She has since remarried, and is now retired, after rising to the position of Vice President at the Bank of America in Albuquerque.
