Plaquette in-12°, broché, couverture muette frappée du chiffre "2" sur la première de couverture dans le coin supérieur gauche. 12 pp. Bibliothèque galante ou collection du genre libre et facétieux, réimprimés par les soins de Lord C***, à cent exemplaires numérotés. Notre exemplaire porte le numéro 94. L'éditeur belge Vital Puissant (1836-1878), dont c'est là le vrai patronyme, fut en son temps un spécialiste de l'édition clandestine. Pamphlétaire (opposant farouche de Napoléon III et de l'impératrice Eugénie), plagiaire, éditeur de textes et de gravures obscènes, parfois même maître chanteur, son commerce séditieux lui valut quelques jours d'emprisonnement. Si la plupart de ses publications, brochures politiques et licencieuses, brillèrent par le peu de soin appliqué à leur édition - il est vrai qu'elles étaient fabriquées à la hâte pour être distribuées sous le manteau et qu'elles n'étaient pas destinées à la collection - il n'en va pas de même pour le petit ensemble nommé "La bibliothèque galante". Constituée de 7 plaquettes, proposant la réédition de textes rares du XVIIIe siècle, cette collection se distingue par l'application et la recherche apportés à la réalisation de ces ravissants petits volumes. Tiré sur papier vergé Van Gelder, en noir et rouge pour le titre, en rouge pour la justification de tirage, ces plaquettes portent toutes la marque "à la sphère" des Elzevier. La présentation et le contenu des ouvrages n'est pas sans rappeler la collection crée par Jules Gay, intitulée La bibliothèque libre. L'imitation est si parfaite qu'elle abusa Georges Vicaire qui classa dans son "Manuel de livres du XIXe siècle" les plaquettes de Puissant dans la série "Collection Gay". A noter, les couvertures muettes de la série portent chacune un numéro (de 1 à 7) dans le coin supérieur gauche, toutes à l'exception de "L'argus des boudoirs ou l'indiscret Bruxellois" dont le numéro (4) est absent.…
