Marianne Vitale (*1973 East Rockaway, USA) präsentiert übermannsgroße Stahlskulpturen, denen die Herkunft aus dem Schienenverkehr anzusehen ist, im Verbund mit raumgreifenden Installationen, etwa einer hölzernen Wildwest-Bar, deren Fußsockel noch die Gebrauchsspuren der Besucher trägt. An der Rückseite der Bar sind vor schwarzen Hintergrund bizarre Gipsmasken aufgestellt, deren jeweilige Form zwischen Grusel und Gelächter ausformuliert ist. Ihre dritte Werkgruppe gilt Oberflächen, etwa alten geflickten Teerdächern, die sie als Roof oder Shingle Paintings bezeichnet. Dieses hintergründige Werk wirft nochmals ein Schlaglicht auf die große amerikanische Erzählung und ihr Scheitern. Das Bizarre daran löst die Künstlerin in ihrem Text »Transformationsrituale im großen Grenzland« auf, wo sie daran erinnert, dass Frauen im Amerika der Westausdehnung während ihrer Regelblutung der Aufenthalt an Schmelzöfen untersagt war; in Wisconsin heißt denn auch eine Redewendung, bei der Schmelze »rinnt die Schlacke wie die Monatsblutung einer Frau«.
