Seit 1941 bekämpfte er dieses Regime und gehörte zum Widerstand gegen die deutsche Wehrmacht, die im September 1943 Italien besetzte. Mit der Verhaftung des Veroneser Widerstandskomitees begann auch Bocchettas Weg in die Deportation. Über Bozen wur- den er und seine Mitkämpfer 1944 in das KZ Flossenbürg und kurz danach in das Außenlager Hersbruck eingeliefert. Hier leisteten sie Sklavenarbeit für die Rüstungsproduktion und erlebten alle Schrecken der deutschen Konzentrationslager. Im Frühjahr 1945 konnte Bocchetta entkommen - er war einer von nur zwei Überlebenden der Veroneser Gruppe. In einem Nachkriegsitalien, das wenig Interesse an der eigenen Vergangenheit zeigte, fand Bocchetta keinen Platz und wanderte 1949 nach Südamerika aus. In Argentinien, Venezuela und seit 1958 in den USA arbeitete er vor allem als freier Bildhauer. Seit 1959 lehrte er Sprachwissenschaft an verschiedenen Universitäten in Chicago. 1972 gab er die Lehrtätigkeit auf, um ganz seiner Berufung als Maler und Bildhauer zu folgen. In seinen Skulpturen und in seinen Texten verarbeitete Bocchetta die Erfahrungen aus ,jenen fünf verdammten Jahren" des Widerstandes und der Verfolgung. 1986 schrieb er seine Erinnerungen nieder und erst im Oktober 1992 kehrte er endgültig nach Verona zurück. Seine Erinnerungen gehen über die Schilderungen des Erlebten hinaus. Sie sind der Ausdruck seiner liberalen Weltsicht, die sich gegen den italienischen Faschismus und gegen den deutschen Nationalsozialismus bewähren musste. Wie mit einer Kamera hält er verschiedene Szenen aus seinem Leben in Verona fest. Die Erfahrung in den Lagern von Bozen bis Hersbruck verdichten sich dann zu einem Gemälde dieser Grenzerfahrung menschlicher Existenz. Es ist der bisher einzige ins Deutsche übersetzte Bericht eines Italieners über die Haft in den Konzentrationslagern Flossenbürg und Hersbruck. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 308.
