Softcover. Condizione: Very Good. 7th. 1984 softcover. UNREAD COPY with unmarked, firmly bound pages. Green paper cover shows minor shelf wear only. Overall, a bright, presentable copy. Translated from the Russian by Antonina W. Bouis. Harold C Schonberg, writing in the New York Times Book Review about TESTIMONY by Dmitri Shostakovich: "An extremely powerful, grim, gripping book and one that will set the record straight. These are not the remarks of a man who was flung out of the party . Aside from two collisions with the authorities, Shostakovich was in favor until the very end. The memoirs are a serious indictment of past and present Russia, as wel as the recollections of a life apparently spent in fear and despair. Obviously the final text, with its attack on the Stalin period and the Soviet musical bureaucracy, could not be published in the Soviet Union. Mr Volkov [the book's editor Solomon Volkov] 'took measures' to get the manuscript to the West. Shostakovich stipulated that the book not be published until aftermhis death. TESTIMONY is indeed the testimony of a major creator in music. But it is much mor than that. The book could have been subtitled 'The Life of the Russian Intellectual Under Stalin.'".…

Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. [xliv] 289 [5] pages. Illustrations. Footnotes. Major Compositions, Titles, and Awards. Index. Sticker residue on back cover. This is the powerful memoirs which an ailing Dmitri Shostakovich dictated to a young Russian musicologist, Solomon Volkov. When it was first published in 1979, it became an international bestseller. This 25th anniversary edition includes a new foreword by Vladimir Ashkenazy, as well as black-and-white photos. "Testimony changed the perception of Shostakovich's life and work dramatically, and influenced innumerable performances of his music. Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich (25 September [O.S. 12 September] 1906 - 9 August 1975) was a Soviet/Russian composer and pianist who became internationally known after the premiere of his First Symphony in 1926 . He thereafter was regarded as a major composer. Shostakovich had a complex relationship with its government. His 1934 opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk was a success but later condemned by the Soviet government. In 1948, his work was denounced, with professional consequences lasting several years. Even after his censure was rescinded in 1956, performances of his music were subject to state interventions, Shostakovich was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union (from 1962 until his death), as well as chairman of the RSFSR Union of Composers (1960-1968). He earned important awards, including the Order of Lenin. Scholarly interest has increased since the late 20th century, including debate about the relationship between his music and his attitudes toward the Soviet government. Solomon Moiseyevich Volkov (born 17 April 1944) is a Russian journalist and musicologist. His primary area of expertise has been the history and aesthetics of Russian and Soviet music, as well as the psychology of musical perception and performance. He published numerous articles in scholarly and popular journals and wrote the book Young Composers of Leningrad in 1971. This book, which contained a preface by Shostakovich, was reportedly well received. He is best known for Testimony, which was published in 1979 following his emigration from the Soviet Union in 1976. According to him, the book was the memoir of Dmitri Shostakovich, as related to him by the composer. Testimony was published in October 1979 who claimed that it was the memoirs of the composer Dmitri Shostakovich, who had died in 1975. Since its publication, its portrayal of the composer and his views has been controversial: the Shostakovich of the book was sometimes critical of fellow composers and most notably was strongly anti-Soviet in his views. The book also contained comments on his own music, suggesting that it was intended as veiled criticism of the Soviet authorities and support for the dissident movement. The authenticity of the book is still disputed. The composer's friend Flora Litvinova recalls Shostakovich saying, in reference to an unnamed Leningrad musicologist (Volkov was from Leningrad): "We now meet constantly, and I tell him everything I remember about my works and myself. He writes it down, and at a subsequent meeting I look it over." Maxim Shostakovich has also commented on Testimony and Volkov more favorably since 1991, when the Soviet regime fell. To Allan B. Ho and Dmitry Feofanov, he confirmed that his father had told him about "meeting a young man from Leningrad [Volkov] who knows his music extremely well" and that "Volkov did meet with Shostakovich to work on his reminiscences". Maxim emphasized repeatedly: "I am a supporter both of Testimony and of Volkov." Volkov said that Shostakovich dictated the material in the book at a series of meetings with him between 1971 and 1974. Volkov took notes at each meeting, transcribed and edited the material, and presented it to the composer at their next meeting. Shostakovich then signed the first page of each chapter. It is difficult, without access to Volkov's original notes (claimed to be lost), to ascertain where passages attributed to Shostakovich end and Volkov's passages begin. 25th anniversary edition [stated] Presumed first printing thus.…
