Blue cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine. Some wear to extremities with a couple of corners just barely rubbed through top and bottom of spine frayed, cloth slightly soiled, spine slightly darkened, gilt mostly bright, previous owner's name on front pastedown (James T. Hudson 1913), else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. Adolf Harnack (1851-1930) was Professor of Church History in the University of Berlin and a recognized world class scholar. This is a standard work on the sayings of Jesus common to Matthew and Luke which tries to determine the content of this their second source, Q.

Ebenso gewiß ist freilich, daß die Sitte der Kirche von Anfang an die Bestattung in der Erde verlangt hat und daß aus dieser Sitte, der eine tiefe Symbolik z…u Grunde liegt, sich wertvolle Gebräuche entwickelt haben, welche ein gewisses Einheitsband unter den Christen bilden [.] Was [.] die Kirche betrifft, so mag sie im Hinblick auf die alte Sitte noch so viele Bedenken erheben; aber sie verstößt gegen den Geist Christi und gegen ihre Pflicht, wenn sie bei Feuerbestattungen den Leidtragenden den kirchlichen Trost versagt [.]". - Beiliegend 4 eh.
