Edité par Blondé artprinting international : 1999 Peintre et graveur belge né à Ostende (1860-1949) précurseur de l'expressionnisme et du surréalisme. James Ensor est né à Ostende en 1949. Figure originale il domina la peinture belge de son époque. Il commença à peindre sous l'influence de Manet et Degas et des symbolistes de l'époque qui renoncèrent à exprimer les apparences au profit des idées. Sa particularité se trouve dans l'exceptionnelle ardeur vitale qui lui fait apprécier les êtres et les choses jusque dans les aspects les plus positifs et materiels dans un débordement de joie qui entraine tout et chacun dans des rondes triomphantes. On a comparé sa carrière à un film montrant à l'accéléré près d'un demi-siècle de peinture, allant du naturalisme à l'expressionnisme et au surréalisme en passant par l'impressionnisme, le symbolisme et le fauvisme. On ne peut donc associer son nom à un style pictural défini; il les transcende tous. Méconnu pendant ses années de génie, il fut fêté dans sa vieillesse, alors qu'il ne faisait que se survivre.

He is the author of over 60 publications, including books on Lachaise, Nakian, Diebenkorn and Frank Lloyd Wright.
