Numbering only 2,500 in 1900, their increase during the 20th century has more than kept pace with the extraordinary growth of the city as a whole and is now estimated at 510,000. They have played a major role in the economic life of the city, from the Hellmans and Newmarks of the 19th century to the film producers, home builders and financiers of our own day. Los Angeles Jews have also contributed broadly to the cultural and educational growth of their city, while maintaining and advancing a rich religious and cultural life of their own. Based upon the general press of the 19th century and supplemented by the Jewish press of the 20th century, this work is the first full treatment of the Jewish community of Los Angeles. The records of its institutions have been extensively utilized along with the results of original computerized social and demographic research. History of the Jews of Los Angeles is the second in the Regional History Series of the American Jewish History Center of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, which sponsored the writing of this volume in association with the University of Judaism, the West Coast branch of the Seminary. The general editors for the series are Salo W. Baron, Moshe Davis and Allan Nevins. In preparing the history, the cooperation and active assistance of various local organizations, including the Jewish Federation~Council of Greater Los Angeles, the Southern California Jewish Historical Society and the Huntington Library and Art Gallery, helped to combine national outlook with local focus. The volume shows the Jews of Los Angeles in vivid historic perspective as active citizens of their city, builders of its Jewish community and participants in all movements for civic welfare and cultural and spiritual enhancement.
