This work problematises the situation in the former commercial farms, and argues that, the crisis was intrinsic in the jambanja process, and the subsequent state incapacity to offer post-settlement support to the new landholders. Using ethnographic data from three resettlement farms in uMguza District, it argues that jambanja gave birth to subsistence landholders in commercial farming zones.These landholders were not farmers but they fulfilled a political objective for the government, which later abandoned them without any post-settlement support. Without state support, the new landholders failed the transition from a traditional agricultural system to commercial orientated production, resulting in their falling back on the agricultural system they knew best.Resettlement also interfered with traditional institutions, which have long informed African farming practices. 76 pp. Englisch.…

Dit werk problematiseert de situatie in de voormalige commerciële boerderijen, en stelt dat de crisis inherent was aan het 'jambanja'-proces, en het daaropvolgende onvermogen van de staat om de nieuwe grondbezitters na de hervestiging steun te bieden. Aan de hand van etnografische gegevens van drie hervestigingsboerderijen in het uMguza-district wordt betoogd dat uit 'jambanja' zelfvoorzienende grondbezitters in commerciële landbouwzones zijn voortgekomen. Deze grondbezitters waren geen boeren, maar zij vervulden een politieke doelstelling voor de regering, die hen later in de steek liet zonder enige steun na de hervestiging. Zonder steun van de staat slaagden de nieuwe grondbezitters er niet in de overgang te maken van een traditioneel landbouwsysteem naar een commercieel georiënteerde productie, waardoor ze terugvielen op het landbouwsysteem dat ze het beste kenden.Hervestiging verstoorde ook de traditionele instellingen, die al lang de basis vormen van de Afrikaanse landbouwpraktijken.…
