Each chapter begins with a short essay followed by a series of gloriously reproduced photogravures of some of the most compelling objet d'art ever assembled in one book. The majority of the plates are duotones but there are some color, there are also a large number of foldouts, either single or double. The overall effect is one of extraordinary artistry, scholarly knowledge, and pure magical art asserting itself across great distance and eons of time.
