William Elliot Griffis (September 17, 1843 February 5, 1928) was an American orientalist, Congregational minister, lecturer, and prolific author. While attending Rutgers University, Griffis was an English and Latin language tutor for Tarō Kusakabe, a young samurai from the province of Echizen, Japan. In September 1870 Griffis was invited to Japan, for the purpose of organizing schools along modern lines. In 1871, he was Superintendent of Education in the province of Echizen. He published some 50 works over his lifetime, many on the Far East, and many on fairy tales. This book "The Mikado's Empire" was his first book and consists of two parts Book 1 "History of Japan from 660 B.C. to 1872 A. D." and Book 2 "Personal Experiences, Observations, and Studies in Japan, 1870 1874." This work includes a map of Japan and 108 illustrations. A number are full page and each of these has a tissue guard. This book, 625 pages, is bound in maroon cloth with gold lettering on the front cover and spine. Overall the book is in very good condition. The front cover is splattered with what looks like white paint, and all of the covers are worn and somewhat faded. The head and foot of the spine are frayed as are the corners. The bottom of the pages have a small surface stain not visible on the pages themselves.Previous owner's name and location pasted on first endpaper. Internally, the book is in excellent condition with light foxing only on first and last leaves in the book with all text and illustrations bright and clear. The rear of the book contains 12 pages of Harper ads for "Valuable books of Exploration, Travel and Adventure". Structurally the book is sound and square. A very acceptable copy of a major work on Japan.…

During the American Civil War, he served two months as a corporal in Company H of the 44th Pennsylvania Militia after Robert E. Lee invaded Pennsylvania in 1863. After the war, he attended Rutgers University at New Brunswick, New Jersey, graduating in 1869.At Rutgers, Griffis was an English and Latin language tutor for Tar¿ Kusakabe, a young samurai from the province of Echizen (part of modern Fukui).After a year of travel in Europe, he studied at the seminary of the Reformed Church in America in New Brunswick (known today as the New Brunswick Theological Seminary).In September 1870 Griffis was invited to Japan by Matsudaira Shungaku, for the purpose of organizing schools along modern lines.
