There are two inscriptions on the front end papers from previous owners. No loss of content; very readable. Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie is an epic poem by…the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, written in English and published in 1847. The poem follows an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love Gabriel during the expulsion of the Acadians (1755-1764). The idea for the poem came from Longfellow's friend Nathaniel Hawthorne. Longfellow used dactylic hexameter, imitating Greek and Latin classics. Though the choice was criticized, it became Longfellow's most famous work in his lifetime and remains one of his most popular and enduring works. The poem had a powerful effect in defining both Acadian history and identity in the 19th and 20th centuries. It represents lost loved ones and heartbreak but also keeping hope. Evangeline describes the betrothal of a fictional Acadian girl named Evangeline Bellefontaine to her beloved, Gabriel Lajeunesse, and their separation as the British deport the Acadians from Acadie in the Great Upheaval. The poem then follows Evangeline across the landscapes of America as she spends years in a search for him, at some times being near to Gabriel without realizing he was near. Finally she settles in Philadelphia and, as an old woman, works as a Sister of Mercy among the poor. Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This First illustrated London edition of 1854 will appeal to collectors of decorative bindings as well as to admirers of Longfellow. The original publisher's blue cloth with an abundance of gilt combined with the all edge gilt will please collectors who love the visual and tac…tile nature of a book. The binding is relatively strong other than one split (see photo 5) which remains intact. The book sits slightly off square. The corners are bumped and the top and bottom of the spine have worn (see photos). The text pages are clean but have tanned over the last 170 years. For those who enjoy knowing a book's provenance, we have information on the front endpapers concerning same. In 1861 it was owned by a Philip Metcalfe. There is also the obituary of Rev. Thomas McCormick Parish Priest of Donnybrook, Dublin who died in 1879 attached with together with his signature. This book was clearly loved and cherished by its previous owners. Please examine all photos. More available upon request. Fifty engravings on wood by Birket Foster and Jane E. Hay (illustratore).
