This First illustrated London edition of 1854 will appeal to collectors of decorative bindings as well as to admirers of Longfellow. The original publisher's blue cloth with an abundance of gilt combined with the all edge gilt will please collectors who love the visual and tactile nature of a book. The binding is relatively strong other than one split (see photo 5) which remains intact. The book sits slightly off square. The corners are bumped and the top and bottom of the spine have worn (see photos). The text pages are clean but have tanned over the last 170 years. For those who enjoy knowing a book's provenance, we have information on the front endpapers concerning same. In 1861 it was owned by a Philip Metcalfe. There is also the obituary of Rev. Thomas McCormick Parish Priest of Donnybrook, Dublin who died in 1879 attached with together with his signature. This book was clearly loved and cherished by its previous owners.
