Many works dealing with slavery have been published in the 19th, 20th and 21st century, and some of them have sparked debates that are not only on literary issues. Two of these are Herman Melville's (1819-1891) Benito Cereno (1855) and Mark Twain's (1835-1910, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens) Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884). These two novels are often seen as major works in American literary history, and their authors are among the country's most celebrated. Both books have in common that their stories play in the time before the abolition of slavery. Benito Cereno deals with a slave revolt on a ship, while Huckleberry Finn depicts the adventures of its eponymous hero and a runaway slave, Jim. Another feature the novels share is the fact that both have been charged to contain racist and pro-slavery attitudes. This paper will evaluate and analyze these assertions in order to show that they are false because they are based on misunderstandings. It aims to provide a profound delineation of the racial attitudes in the two novels.The assumption here is that neither Melville nor Twain wrote racist novels. This shall be proven with the help of a close analysis of the narrative perspectives and literary devices used in the books. Both of the stories, as will be shown later, are told by narrators that are far from being easy to grasp without a deeper examination of their character and function. A comprehensive insight into these appears to be beneficial for a better understanding of both of the novels.The present paper will begin with an exploration of the individual attitudes of the two authors. Although the knowledge of writers' opinions can never be used as the sole key to a literary work's interpretation, it can still be helpful to gain an insight into his ideas about the world he or she depicts in his or her fiction. After this, the two novels will be dealt with separately. In a first step, the assertions about each one's racism will be delineated. Then, the narrative perspectives and other literary techniques will be thoroughly analyzed. In a last step, the novels' racism will be evaluated with the help of the insights gained about the techniques used. It shall be shown that in the light of this, neither Benito Cereno nor Huckleberry Finn are racist books.

Jahrhunderts eine besondere Stellung ein. Er schrieb die Geschichte Georg Bendemanns, der von seinem Vater zum Tod durch Ertrinken verurteilt wird und dieses Urteil sofort selbst vollzieht, in einer Nacht nieder. Dieses Erlebnis war für ihn fortan der Maßstab für seine literarische Produktion. 'Das Urteil' war ihm Zeit seines Lebens eines seiner liebsten Erzeugnisse, wobei anzumerken ist, dass Kafka nur wenige seiner Werke vor sich selbst als gelungen gelten ließ. Die meisten Menschen, die Kafka kennen - ob Schüler, Literaturwissenschaftler oder einfach nur -Liebhaber - dürften wissen, dass Franz Kafka einen großen Teil seines Lebens unter dem schwierigen Verhältnis, das er zu seinem Vater hatte, litt, und dass diese Thematik auch beträchtlichen Einzug in sein Werk fand. Wirft man einen ersten Blick auf die Erzählung 'Das Urteil', so fällt schnell auf, dass hier dieser Vater-Sohn-Konflikt thematisiert wird. Es erscheint daher angezeigt, einmal diese Vatergestalt genauer zu untersuchen, die Georg Bendemann mit ihrem Wort in den Selbstmord treiben kann. Dies sollte zweifellos nicht geschehen, ohne den tatsächlichen Vater des Autors zu betrachten. Daher ist es ratsam, Kafkas 'Brief an den Vater' hinzuziehen. Dieser ist sowohl Dokument, Literatur und Analyse der Psyche des Verfassers. Er erweist sich als äußerst hilfreich um die autobiographischen Aspekte im 'Urteil' herauszuarbeiten. Andere Sachverhalte und Personen in der Geschichte als der Vater sollen hier zuerst einmal, solang das möglich ist, in den Hintergrund treten und nur im Zusammenhang mit dem Vater später etwas näher betrachtet werden.

Die mediävistische Literaturwissenschaft setzte sich erst seit der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts interpretierend mit dem Inhalt des Eneasromans auseinander. Dabei wurde die Minne eines der Hauptthemen in der Rezeption. Zu Anfang wurde noch versucht, die Laviniaminne als rechte, und die Didominne als unrechte Minne darzustellen und zu analysieren, was allerdings schnell als falsche Herangehensweise betrachtet wurde. Das Thema der Minne konnte die Forschung aber auf lange Zeit hin beschäftigen. Dido scheint die Forscher im Allgemeinen aufgrund der noch größeren Dramatik ihres Handlungsstrangs mehr zu interessieren als Lavinia. Häufig wird die Ansicht vertreten, dass die Laviniaminne einen Vorbildcharakter in der Minnekonzeption Heinrichs von Veldeke besäße, Vorbildcharakter sowohl gegenüber der Didoepisode als auch für jegliche Minnesituation. Diese als vorbildlich betrachtete Minne wird in diesem Aufsatz untersucht. Dies soll durch einen Vergleich mit der Minne Didos geschehen. Es wird hier ein Augenmerk auf das Minnegespräch zwischen Lavinia und ihrer Mutter Amata gelegt, das von vielen als das Kernstück der Minnedoktrin Heinrichs von Veldeke im Eneasroman angesehen wird; dieses wird aber nicht der alleinige Untersuchungsgegenstand bleiben. Auch weitere im Epos auffindbare Gedanken der Minnelehre und der Ausgangsposition der beiden Frauen sollen nicht außer Acht gelassen werden.

Folgt man der neuen Forschung, scheint es zwar einfach, die Novellenfrage zu beantworten, aber dennoch ist diese noch nicht ganz abgehakt: es finden sich immer wieder Bezeichnungen des Texts als Novelle, und viele, die über Lenz schreiben, fühlen sich genötigt, an dieser oder jener Stelle die Gattungsfrage zu behandeln. Die Schuld für die fälschliche Gattungszuordnung der nachfolgenden Generationen einfach nur Gutzkow in die Schuhe zu schieben, erscheint zu einfach. Auch ist es schwer zu glauben, dass die frühere Lenz-Forschung, bzw. die vereinzelten Forscher heute, die immer noch von einer Novelle reden, nicht mit Gattungsklassifikationen umgehen können. Somit lohnt es sich, sich mit dieser Frage zu beschäftigen. Zum anderen soll die Klassifizierung von Lenz als Fragment einer genaueren Untersuchung unterzogen werden, wobei hier die Editionsgeschichte und die Betrachtung der Textgestalt größere Abschnitte einnehmen werden. Da bei einem für die Literaturgeschichte derart wichtigen Text die textkritische Begutachtung der Textgestalt nicht außer acht gelassen werden darf, bietet es sich an, sich mit dieser Fragestellung zu befassen, da hier einige Unklarheit in der Forschung herrscht.
