Durante su estancia en la ciudad de Tübingen el estudiante Wilhelm Waiblinger (1804-1830) frecuentó a Friedrich Hölderlin, recluido en casa del carpintero Zimmer, con la intención de tomar apuntes con destino a una futura novela inspirada en la vida del escritor arrebatado por la locura. Fascinado por el personaje, durante los años 1822, 23 y 24 Waiblinger anotó en sus Diarios los encuentros con el poeta y sus relaciones, y algo después, en Roma, redactó en 1827-28 su texto Vida, poesía y locura de Friedrich Hölderlin , inapreciable para la posteridad por ser el primer testimonio directo y extenso sobre el poeta escrito por alguien que lo trató personalmente.
