Condition is VERY GOOD ; hardly any edgewear, leather good, supple. Marbled paper boards have some scuffed areas showing pale paper. Spine excellent with just… a hint of wear along hinges. Binding tight and text very clean, with some very mild foxing to early and latter pgs and some age browing (mild) throughout. Poetry. Stax.

First Edition. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. no date (early 19th century, prob 1820s), 212pp, frontispiece portrait of author (Walcot, 1738-1819, wrote humorous and satirical verse in the classical style under the pseudonym Peter Pindar), in Howard's Beauties of Literature seri…es, with paper-covered boards, chipped at spine, outer hinges cracked, corners worn, text block clean apart from foxing to title page. The selections include The Lousiad, 'An Heroi-Comic Poem' inspired by an incident when His Majesty discovered, as he sat at table, a louse upon his plate. In the subsequent contretemps, the cooks, scullions etc. had to be shaved, and the unfortunate louse was condemned to die.

Leather. Condizione: Very Good. A scarce collection of the poetry of satirist John Walcot, bound from the parts and published between 1790 and 1792. Containing A Commiserating Epistle to James Lowther, Earl of Lonsdale; Odes to Mr Paine, Author or Rights of Man; More Money! Or, Odes of Instruction to Mr Pitt; Odes of Importance;… The Tears of St. Margaret; A Pair of Lyrical Epistles to Lord Macartney and his Ship; The Lousiad; and A Poetical, Serious and Possibly Impertinent Epistle to the Pope, In 1780, Wolcot went to London and commenced writing satires. The first objects of his attentions were the members of the Royal Academy, and these attempts being well received, he soon began to fly at higher game, the King and Queen being the most frequent marks for his satirical shafts. In 1786 appeared The Lousiad, a Heroi-Comic Poem, taking its name from a legend that a louse had once appeared on the King's dinner plate. Other objects of his attack were Boswell, the biographer of Samuel Johnson, James Bruce, the Abyssinian traveller, Hannah More, former bluestocking and playwright, and Bishop Porteus. Wolcot, who wrote under the nom-de-plume of "Peter Pindar", had a remarkable vein of humour and wit, which, while intensely comic to persons not involved, stung its subjects to the quick. He had likewise strong intelligence, and a power of coining effective phrases. In other kinds of composition, as in some ballads which he wrote, an unexpected touch of gentleness and even tenderness appears. The title page has been rebacked. Rebound in red calf binding. Externally smart, though some marks to the boards. Internally, fimly bound. Some closed tears to the pages, in places affecting the text, which have been repaired with tape. Pages have some scattered light spotting throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD with a good only interior. Very Good. None (illustratore). book.

( The principal contemporary account of the trial) to rear of title page Will Prichard, the Mayor of the City of London appoints Richard Royston, Benjamin Took and Charles Mearn and no one else to publish. In good condition for age, some dirt/ ageing and fold to title page, repaired tear to top. Rest in good condition, some ageing and tiny edge nicks to a couple of pages. 2nd item; is a 1683 printed copy of a 2 page "Letter written to my Lord Russel in Newgate the Twentieth of July 1683" by John Tillotson, published by R. Balwin In good condition, a few minor ink dots/marks. 3rd item; Title page + 4 pages, The last speech & behaviour of William Late Lord Russel upon the scaffold in Lincolns-Inne-Fields, a little before his execution, on Saturday, July 21. 1683, being condemned for high-treason in conspiring the death of the King and the subversion of the government, &c., together with the paper delivered by him to the sheriffs, and signed with his own hand. Also The last speeches, behaviour, and prayers of Capt. Thomas Walcot, John Rouse Gent. & William Hone joyner : a little before their execution at Tyburn, on Friday the 20th of July 1683, being condemned for high-treason in conspiring, &c. In good condition for age, some minor ageing. 4th item: 14 pages, is "The Speeches of Captain walcot, Jo Rouse and Will Hone, on Friday the Twentieth of July 1683" In good condition for age, some ageing. The whole is unbound though all attached together and was once bound, but now all attached together with a latter end page. From a quick net check this is the only copy of the four items for sale together. The principal contemporary account of the trial of the plot's conspirators, leading to the execution of Lord Russell (and Algernon Sydney) and contributing mightily if indirectly to the Revolution and the reform of the English law of treason. With 3 other rare 1683 contemporary items relating to it. Overall in good condition for 1683, some ageing, very light foxing, a few minor listed faults, but no major faults. A rare /possibly unique last chance to ever purchase all 4 original Rye House Plot items together. Size: 18.5 x 28.5cm. Approx.
