Front and back inside boards have lots of names and writings. Rest is clean and unmarked. A story of behind the front in the hills of Virginia, during the Civil War, of those who took no part in the war but carried the brunt, nonetheless. No great battles are fought in the pages, no famous historical figures cross the stage, but one shares and sympathizes with the experiences of Young Martin, who refuses to believe the war will come, who never joins up but is forced to fight throughout the entire period to keep himself, his wife and his ruined neighbors alive and clothed. Size: 8 1/4h x 5 1/2w. Book.

Uncommon novel, "a selection of The Discoverers," about a struggling Russian-Jewish immigrant on New York's Lower East Side, and later in Mississippi, spanning the period 1893-1916. (Hanna 3652) Waldman published a sequel, "Broad is the Way," the following year; both books seem to have been largely overlooked by scholars of American immigrant literature.
