Full title - THE COMPLETE ANGLER OF IZAAK WALTON AND CHARLES COTTON: EXTENSIVELY EMBELLISHED WITH ENGRAVINGS ON COPPER AND WOOD, FROM ORIGINAL PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS, BY FIRST-RATE ARTISTS. TO WHICH ARE ADDED, AN INTRODUCTORY ESSAY; THE LINNAEAN ARRANGEMENT OF THE VARIOUS RIVER-FISH DELINEATED IN THE WORK; AND ILLUSTRATIVE NOTES. lx, 411, [1], [4] pages. Hardcover: H 16.25cm x L 10.25cm. Fine binding, probably later 19th century, likely the work of a London shop but without a binder's mark. Full light brown polished calf leather; gilt borders to boards with gilt inner dentelles; spine has five raised bands with four gilt tooled compartments; spine's dark purple title label with gilt lettered "The Complete Angler" but author's compartment missing its label with impression of "Walton & Cotton" still faintly discernable; date "1823" stamped in gilt at spine heel which was a practice of the Zaehnsdorf bindery but certainly not exclusive to that renowned firm. Some scuffing at joints, spine ends, and at board edges particularly at corners; staining at front board's top left quarter with small patch of surface peeling. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Binding is firm. B/w plates. Several pencil notes by a past bookseller on rear free endpaper recto; no other such markings readily apparent upon a quick perusal. Moisture stain at frontis leaf's top margin; a few occurrences of light foxing and toning to interior pages. Still a handsome book. Separate title leaf for Part II paged as 263-264 also with John Major imprint for 1823; frontispiece portraits opposite each title leaf as well as other unpaged b/w plates are dated for 1822. "Descriptive List of Embellishments" (pages iii-xx) cites 77 woodcuts and 14 copper plates. Four pages of publisher advertisements at rear. (Also available in a matching leather binding but sold separately is THE LIVES OF DR. JOHN DONNE, SIR HENRY WOTTON . . . London: John Major, 1825.).
