There is a lot to digest in this old periodical. The word beauty must have been making the rounds in the editorial office, for there are Two articles addressing said word : "Beauty in the Modern Cho…rus", and "Beauty and the Woman of Fifty". Both are illustrated with photographs of lovely women. On a more serious front, apiece on "The Police Systems of Europe" by Avery D. Andrews (who had been Police Commissioner of New York). Surprising to see the bicycle usage in Europe for officers of the law; the article is illustrated with photographs. "Mankind in the Making", a serialized work by H. G. Wells, is continued. A feature on European artist Franz Von Lembach should be interesting to those who are aware of him. There is plenty of fiction, and a smattering of poetry, and a great deal of period advertising, covering just about anything you could imagine, including automobiles, cameras, typewriters, fashion, foods, medical curiosities, and more. INTERIOR : One leaf in the front section of advertising has been partly clipped (We've supplied a picture of this), else the issue is complete and intact. For many collectors and fans of science fiction, the main thing in this issue is an early science fiction story by Julian Hawthorne titled "June 1993" in which the protagonist visits the United State…s 100 years in the future. That meant 1993. The author imagines a vastly different world, including boat-like vehicles that travel through the air, high above the landscape. In one of the fine illustrations by Dan Beard (of Boy Scouts fame) a group of people are on a luxury cruise in the flying boat. They look much like an assortment of hippies and bohemians. Julian Hawthorne was the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Sophia Peabody. See the Table of Contents, provided below for a complete list of the issue's contents. Front cover has title, etc., and Table of contents, printed in black and red; rear cover has illustrated advertising, printed in red and black. CONDITION -- very good -- This previously owned antique periodical is complete and intact - clean and attractive , with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR : Spine is weathered, with extremities chipped and displaying small loss ; cover edges display small nicking and minute tears; cover surface rub is modest, and there is, as well toning around the edges. BINDING : Solid - no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR : There are a few smudges and small spots, but nothing egregious, the issue being clean and unmarked throughout. Strong, "An Unscientific Story", illustrated by E. Hering (See pictures provided above); also of interest is the first appearance of a story by cult author Octave Thanet, title…d "Beyond the Limit", which is illustrated by C. M. Relyea. Art and Crafts author, impresario, and founder of The Roycroft Press, Elbert Hubbard, wrote a piece about Leo Tolstoy. The article is illustrated with photographs. H. G. Wells is represented by his serial articles on the development of modern society; this installment is titled "The Man-Making forces of the Modern State". There more, including a report on the national tours undertaken by President McKinley, illustrated with photographs; a piece on the Young Napoleon by Field - Marshall Viscount Wolseley, & a photo-illustrated puff piece on barbaric jewelry worn by celebrities, including Sarah Bernhard and the Crown Princess of Romania. There are also stories, poems and bits of literary & social news. Lots of halftone photographs and line drawings. And of course, as with so many Victorian magazines, there are many fascinating period advertisements. Top text-block edge is darkened, and has a touch of spotting INTERIOR - Scattered small 'tea' stains and spotting - a few edge tears - and I spotted at least one leaf corner that was folded (creased) - else the interior is clean and presentable.
