The red cloth boards are in near fine condition. The dust jacket is in very good condition (edge chipping and small tear). 11 x 8, 116 pages, 23 ounces XX [From the back cover and inner flaps] Historic Real de Catorce holds the mark both of Old Spain and of early decades of the Republic of Mexico. As indicated by the title, THE INCREDIBLE CITY has "color" its distinctive own. Travelers pass through a tunnel on the last lap of their journey there, to emerge for their first view of the city spread before them on the slope of a precipitous mountain. Its beginning and the name itself accent this distinction — Real de Catorce was named for 14 bandits who were first to make their imprint on the region. (Catorce means 14 in Spanish), The "Real" was added when the King of Spain began to receive his share of the riches from deposits of silver and other metals carried out by mule train over the high mountain trails. Catorce is no one-street western ghost town that lived for a decade and died; its history is packed with stories of its glories when the silver lodes formed a passport to wealth for Spanish adventurers and latter day engineers who unlocked the treasures. Its economy for 150 years was based on the mineral wealth and reflected in the way of life of a cosmopolitan city. Residents today tell of ghosts that linger in the House of Money where some of the Republic's rarest coins were minted. They recall the days when bandits under the guise of Revolutionaries raided the town and rode away wearing silk top hats stolen from homes they looted. Each October 4, the faithful's belief in the protection of St. Francis of Assisi inspires a pilgrimage to the mountain city as thousands come to pay tribute to the particular image of the noted saint, holding a place of honor in the principal church. They bring milagros (miracle medals) to place before the image, testimonials of prayers answered. Today, Catorce is a magnet for all interests - architects, rock hounds, artists, antique collectors, history buffs, gem and coin collectors, minerologists, students of ethnology, economics and sociology. XX Lucy H. Wallace is a newspaper woman, freelance photographer-writer who has published articles and pictures in many national magazines and newspapers. She is active in Texas Press Women, National Federation of Press Women, and Valley By-Liners. A resident of the Mexican-United States Border for many years, Miss Wallace has traveled extensively in Mexico where contacts made there were invaluable in the research for THE INCREDIBLE CITY.
