Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition, first printing. Original light brown cloth with black lettering and blocking to the spine and front panel, in the John Heartfield designed dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm. There is a little rubbing to spine tips and some minor toning to the spine panel and outer edges. The contents are clean without inscriptions of stamps, with some light spotting to the page block edges and to the margins of a few pages within. The dustwrapper shows some minor toning and soiling, the spine a little darkened. There is a half-centimetre patch of loss to the head of the spine and a name written in blue ink to the rear panel. A generous anthology, featuring prose and poetry by a host of writers including Keith Douglas, Lawrence Durrell, G. S. Fraser, Sidney Keyes, and Olivia Manning. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Edges of dustwrapper just very slightly creased and rubbed, with very small nicks around the top of the spine. Dustwrapper slightly darkened, mainly to the spine. No chips or tears. ***224mm x 145mm. 170 pages. ***CONTRIBUTORS: Pennethorne Hughes, G. S. Fraser, Sidney Keyes, Lawrence Durrell, John Jarmain, John Pudney, Stefano Terra, Bernard Spencer, J. W. Scott, Erik de Mauny, Albert Cossery, John Waller, D. J. S. Thomson, Keith Douglas, Uys Krige, John Ropes, Olivia Manning, Herbert Howarth, Darrell Wilkinson, R. Brian Scott, Cyril des Baux, John Gawsworth, Izydor Epstein. *** 'This is something more than yet another of these collections of miscellaneous pieces by young and perhaps promising writers that are appearing so frequently at the present time. It has a unity of period and a unity of place. It is bound together, if not by a common theme, by a common mood - the sense of exile, the exhausted tolerance, the climatic vividness, the queer sideshows that, for a West European, make up that complex of emotions and sensations known as the Near East. Here is the sun on crumbling stucco walls: the endless patience of beggars: the smell of spices mingled with the smell of sweat: the dialogue of lust and death: the moment of rage and passion in the sun: the long cool evening, with the patient drinking, and the inconclusive talk. Here is the sense of life as most vivid when it may seem, in detail, most futile; and for many an Englishman home from the Middle East, here, in all its exquisite painfulness, is that landscape which becomes most haunting when it has been left behind for good. These poems, stories, and sketches, with their loving, malicious, or merely exhausted realism, are remarkably free of any overt moralising tendency; but they set in sharp relief, against the crumbling sadness of an older civilisation, the moral problems of the modern Western man: with his ironies, his conventions, his provincial inhibitions, his anxious self-consciousness, and his taut nerves. ***Many of the writers are well-known already, among them Lawrence Durrell, G. S. Fraser, John Pudney, Olivia Manning; there are others: Sidney Keyes, Keith Douglas, Brian Scott, who will not write again. But the authors have also included many new talents.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the first edition, in its original dustwrapper, in extremely nice collectable condition. Quite a fragile production, produced shortly after the Second World War, and uncommon in such nice condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
