Doch das Gefühl der Sicherheit in der Internatsschule Bunce Court währt nicht lange. Im Mai 1940 wird er als 'Ausländer' in Liverpool interniert und mit zweitausend anderen Flüchtlingen auf dem Gefangenenschiff Dunera nach Australien deportiert. 18 Monate verbringt er in Wüstencamps zwischen Stacheldraht und Wachtürmen. Seine Lebensstationen sind vielfältig: Obstpflücker, Soldat, Hafenarbeiter, Hochzeitsfotograf, Seemann und Schriftsteller.
