Diese führten ihn nach Köln, wo er heute noch lebt und arbeitet. Als Mitglied der Künstlergruppe Mülheimer Freiheit wurde er bereits Anfang der 8oer Jahre im Alter von 26 Jahren international bekannt. Die Mülheimer Freiheit war wahrscheinlich die erste konsequent nichtideologische Assoziation von Künstlern nach 1968. Es gab kein Statut, keine Utopie, keine Ein-und Ausschlußverfahren und auch keine Mitgliedschaft. Als Gruppe definierte sie sich lediglich durch die Orte, an denen sie auftrat. Und das waren nicht nur Galerien und Museen. Hans-Peter Adamski, Peter Bömmels, Walter Dahn und Georg Dokoupil stellten Anfang 1980 in der Hahnentorburg in Köln zum ersten Mal gemeinsam aus. Als Mülheimer Freiheit hatten sie im November 1980 in der Galerie Paul Maenz in Köln ihren ersten Auftritt. In der Zwischenzeit gehörten Gerard Kever und Gerhard Naschberger dazu. »Ich möchte sogenannte ästhetische Entscheidungen so weit wie möglich ausblenden und nur das Notwendige tun, einfach nur die Not wenden. Es geht um Gesten, die mehr vom Leben als von der Kunst inspiriert sind.
