This explains, why since the beginning of the computer age, digital memory and storage are finding ever increasing attention in research and development. Of the many different memory and storage technologies investigated for application, only very few survived in the tough economic cost/performance struggle. This process still continues: Semiconductor memories have almost completely replaced the ferrite core memories. For the 'gap' in cost and performance between memory and storage - which is of growing importance for systems throughput, particularly for query and database systems - very promising proposals, such as charge coupled devices and magnetic bubble memories appear. For very high data volumes, devices with automatic storage media transport have been conceived and developed. Mittel dazu waren eine starke Gliederung des Stoffes und die Beschriinkung auf die hier vorliegende Seitenzahl. Bei der Themenauswahl hatten zwei Gesichtspunkte Vorrang: Zum einen die Behandlung der grundlegenden physikalisch-technischen Vorgiinge, wobei angestrebt wurde, eine groBe Palette in ihren Grundzugen darzustelIen; zum anderen war es das Bestreben, die wirtschaftlich bedeutendsten Technologien und Geriite zu beschreiben, die schon heute einen bedeutenden Marktanteil besitzen oder aus der Sicht des Autors zukunftiges Potential versprechen. Neben diesen Feierlichkeiten fand ein Techniksymposium in Verbindung mit einer Technik ausstellung in der Nahe des IBM Werkes Mainz statt, einer der gr613ten deutschen Fertigungsstatten der Datenver arbeitungindustrie. Zielsetzung dieses Techniksymposiums war es, die viel faltigen technischen Leistungen der IBM Deutschland einem geladenen Kreis von Ingenieuren, Wissenschaftlern und Technikern aus Hochschulen, Industrie und Beh6rden vorzutragen. In einem Uberblick iiber die Spannweite der technischen Aufgaben und der erzielten Ergebnisse heute und in den vergangenen Jahren sollten auch zukiinftige Entwicklungen und bevorstehende Veranderungen ange sprochen werden. Der hier vorliegende Tagungsband dieses Symposiums dokumentiert 75 Jahre Technikgeschichte der IBM Deutschland.
