Stapled Wraps. Condizione: Near Fine. This work gives the history of the Southern Pacific 4449 locomotive. It was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1941, and retired in the 1950s. It reposed in a transportation museum until 1974 when it was chosen by the American Freedom Train Foundation to participate in pulling a special train to commemorate the United States Bicentennial. Photographs and a chronology are includes; includes laid in text on the 4449, "The Louisiana World's Fair Daylight," 1984. This copy is clean and solid.

Oblong folio. 336 pp. 100s of photos (many in colour), maps, illusts, colour map endpapers. Gray cloth, gilt lettering, colour map endpapers, w/ d.j. (minor edgewear, couple small closed tears), still a NF/VG- copy. First edition of Volume One of this invaluable history of the SP&S Railway, which followed the Columbia River between Vancouver and Pasco, up the Snake river, and through Eastern Washington towards Spokane. The railroad was jointly owned by the Great Northern Railway and the Northern Pacific Railway. This volume tells the story of the main line from Portland to Spokane, with a separate chapter for each segment, Portland-Vancouver; Vancouver-Wishram; Wishram-Pasco; Pasco-Spokane. Of particular interest are the 3 Howard Fogg paintings.
