The Letter: March 14, 1921/ Master Joseph Dumska [sic],/ 651 Portland St., Baltimore./ My dear Joseph:/ I shall be greatly interested to note the result of the/ operation performed on you at the Johns Hopkins Hospital by Dr. Dandy/ on the 15th of July…, 1915./ Will it be convenient for you to meet me in my office/ on the fourth floor of the Surgical Building, Johns Hopkins Hospital,/ on Friday morning, March 18, at 10.00 o'clock?/ Very truly yours,/ W. S. Halsted [signed], Surgeon-in-Chief." On the verso of Halsted's letter, the patient Joseph Dumsha wrote in pencil: "Dear sir:/ As I am working it would/ be impossible for me to see you. I am/ glad to say that the operation was/ perfect. I gained weight right after I/ left the hospital and have been healthy/ ever since. Thanking you for inquiring/ I remain,/ Yours truly/ Joseph Dumsha." In the letter the last name is "Dumska", but the writing by the patient suggests it is "Dumsha". In addition, Dumsha is a much more common last name. The surgeon who performed the operation was Dr. Walter Dandy.
