Cream boards with brown titles, all edges gilt, floral endpapers. Words and music by Walter Kittredge. "Tenting on the Old Camp Ground" (also known as Tenting Tonight) was a popular son…g during the American Civil War. A particular favorite of enlisted men in the Union army, it was written in 1863 by Walter Kittredge and first performed in that year at Old High Rock, Lynn, Massachusetts. A tableau vivant was given on May 29, 1897, in the auditorium of Girls High School (San Francisco) by Union Army veterans, at right, who sang Tenting on the Old Camp Ground. A Methodist camp meeting variant appeared with title "Tenting Again" in 1869, using the same tune but words modified for the religious environment. Charles Ives later quoted the song in his own political song, "They Are There," changing the lyrics to "Tenting on a new campground"?referring to a worldwide social democracy.

His most famous song, Tenting on the Old Camp Ground, also known as "Tenting Tonight", was sung by both sides of the war and is known throughout the world. Kittredge had been drafted… into the American Civil War in 1863, but prior to his physical, had experienced a severe attack of rheumatic fever, and been rejected by the draft board. Unable to sleep that night, he was inspired to compose his most famous song. Kittredge stated that "I actually saw the whole scene, as described in the song." wiki. Musical score in color printed wraps, plate mark "1300" printed at foot of each music leaf, folio (13-3/4 inches tall), pp. 5, [6 inc. back cover (ads)]. The unusual cover is formed of celluloid, a plastic that had come into much use (collar stays, etc.) during the final decades of t…he 19th century. The cream colored plastic has a fluted edge all around and what appears to be a colored hand decorated front, featuring the title surrounding tents, American flags, a small house and a campfire with its smoke encircling the tents and the house. The author's name is printed at the bottom. The cover has lost none of the "springiness" of celluloid, and the decorations are sparkling. The text is also in near fine condition, and is tied into the cover with an aqua ribbon. The illustrations are extraordinary and the words of Kittredge's famous song run through the book. The song, with its original musical score, is also printed at the end. The frontispiece is a rare print of Custer in his Civil War uniform with his medals; a portrait of Kittredge follows the copyright page. A very rare and unusual item! Language: eng. It was most notably used as the initial medium on which motion pictures were filmed, and was used for a short time at the turn of the century as a novelty binding among its many other uses.
