This Dover edition, first published in 1985, is an unabridged re-publication of the work first published by the Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C., in 1903 as a paper contained in the Twenty- First Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1899-1900. The plates appeared in color in the original edition. The index in the present volume is adapted from that of the original edition, which covered all papers in the Report.
