Baron von Richthofen (you're right, that name OUGHT to be famil…iar; he was the Red Baron's uncle) was a very enthusiastic proponent of ranching in the American West, and this book is his attempt to drum up support for American cattle ranching. (Warning: he wasn't very good at it; he lost most of his herd in the hard winter of 1885-86.) However, he continued in his enthusiasm for America, living there until his death in 1898.
