Waltman was a major in the Army Medical Corps during World War II, serving at the American Hospital in France. He later returned to open a medical practice in Easton, specializing in tumor surgery. In the early 1980s, he was still operating. From the library Dr. Owen Hannaway. Hannaway was director of the Center for the History and Philosophy of Science at Johns Hopkins University. He authored numerous books and served as an editor of academic magazines in the history of science.
