Through a reading of songs by women in their rituals, the discussion investigates the dualism between men and women in the said communities.Through analysis of the women s poetic creations (Nyimbo za Kike) we understand how the people harmonize the male/female distinction into a social whole. The present study draws attention to the central fact that Uswahili practicing men and women live in one world, no matter how much it appears separated into two domains from an outsider s point of view. Our discussion focuses on the cross-gender power relations in terms of 'the negotiated order' in this society. We assume that the men and women in this society, as they interact, continually negotiate rules that define and circumscribe the positive relationships and that power therefore is not limited to its 'universal' formal aspects but must be viewed from the very society s standpoint. The underlying question that remains unanswered by earlier studies therefore is how women learn to influence their men so as to achieve set social objectives. 156 pp. Englisch.…

In its content and formal aspects, this new ushairi differs markedly from the traditionally established character of the genre. It is this evolution that we have explored in this book. Ushairi-Huru is contemporary in that it is intended for a reading East Africa audience. The traditionalists have rejected it as non-ushairi and a controversy has arisen as to the definition of Ushairi. This body of poetic expression is yet to receive adequate academic critical attention. Because of its social-historical context, Ushairi-Huru, calls for a clear comprehension of its motivation and setting. For this reason, we carry out a historical survey highlighting what was there before Ushairi-Huru arose and then examine three poets who represent the Washairi-Huru.We then examine three washairi in so far as they decide to strike a compromise. We conclude that the stages of artistic development of ushairi are logically related to the dynamism of the Swahili society and that Ushairi-huru is a product of the social environment that is continually transforming it into a suitable art form. 128 pp. Englisch.…

The research project set out to look at who the women artists of East Africa region are, what they create or write about, and how they communicate their ideas creatively. Literature as a discipline reflects what happens in reality. Literature can also be prophetic. This project addressed itself to women literary artists in this sub-region who are studied at University level. We articulate views on thirteen (13) women authors of literary works and a total of fourteen (14) women performers from the three countries. In a number of areas these women form an autonomous creative group. However, in terms of stylistic devices, most of them employ very related aspects. Thematically, the women address a variety of issues. They are therefore not highly influenced by the gender roles dictated to them by society. This disproves what has often been argued by feminist critics of literature. Thus, we can conclusively argue that East African women s writing is not necessarily gynocentric.…
