Seinen Abschluß (B.A.) machte er 1893 an der Harvard Univers…ität. Da er im ersten Jahrgang der medizinischen Fakultät war und sein Nachname am Beginn des Alphabeths, war er per Zufall der Erste der den M.D.-Abschluß an dieser Schule machte. Zwischen 1897 und 1904 lehrte er an der Johns Hopkins Universität, danach folgte er einem Ruf an die Universität von Wisconsin-Madison als Professor für Anatomie. Er baute den medizinischen zweijährigen Lehrgang an dieser Universität auf. 1907 wurde er der erste Vorstand dieser Fakultät. Der Ausbau auf einen vierjährigen Lehrgang und die Ansprüche an das Studium führten ihn dazu, Praxissemester in den Studiengang zu integrieren. (Sein Sohn bekam zweimal den Nobelpreis für Physik).
