These maps were designed to help downed pilots navigate hostile or unfamiliar territory and evade capture. This particular map includes: • Southeast Solomon Islands • Santa…Cruz Islands • Bismarck Archipelago (including New Britain and New Ireland) • Northwest Solomon Islands It's double-sided, with one side showing the Bismarck Archipelago and NW Solomon Islands, and the other side depicting the SE Solomon Islands and Santa Cruz Islands • Printed on silk or rayon fabric, chosen for its durability, resistance to moisture, and ability to be folded compactly. • Marked "Restricted", indicating its use was limited to military personnel. • Included wind force, direction, and steadiness data for the May-September period, crucial for planning escape routes or sea drift scenarios. • These maps were part of survival kits carried by pilots in the Pacific Theater. • They could be concealed easily, sewn into clothing or folded into small pouches. • Provided geographic orientation, ocean currents, and island locations to aid in navigation and survival. Some very minor fraying on the edge and contemporary fold marks. This map is stored with us rolled not folded. 39.5cm/32cm.
