Edmund Atwill Wasson (1864-1949) was an Episcopal minister with a Ph.D. from Columbia who brewed beer, made wine, and distilled strong drink in his cellar during Prohibition, appropriate behavior for someone who had previously written Religion and Drink (1914). Officina Bodoni was founded in 1922 by Giovanni Mardersteig (1892-1977), who obtained permission from the Italian government to resurrect the old matrices of Giambattista Bodoni, the great 18th century printer. Most of the typefaces Mardersteig produced were based on 15th century Italian types, including Dante and Fontana, two of his finest.
