Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The second and revised edition of The Anjou Bible: A Royal Manuscript Revealed is the result of new research conducted over the last twelve years and showcases established and new findings regarding the famous Bible kept at the Maurits Sabbe Library of the University of Leuven. The first edition of this monograph was published in the context of the exhibition The Anjou Bible in Museum M in 2010. The second and revised edition of this book accompanies the prestigious publication of the facsimile by Treccani, Rome (La Bibbia dAngio). The Anjou Bible is an imposing manuscript of almost 700 years old and, from a cultural, historical, and art-historical point of view, invaluable. The Anjou Bible is a visual witness statement to the genealogy of the Kings and Queens of Naples and Sicily, belonging to the powerful House of Anjou. During the first half of the fourteenth century, large parts of Southern and Central Europe were controlled by this dynasty. After the premature death of her father Charles in 1328, Joanna of Anjou became heir to the prosperous kingdom of Naples, at this junction ruled by her grandfather Robert of Anjou. Around 1340, the scribe Iannutius de Matrice and the illuminator Cristophoro Orimina wrote and illuminated the large and prestigious Bible. The Anjou Bible is of inestimable importance to the study of both socio-cultural life in medieval Southern Italy and the history of Italian art. As early as 1402 the manuscript was described in the inventory of Jean, duc de Berry (1340-1416), brother of King Charles V of France, and known for his love of art and books. At the beginning of the sixteenth century the manuscript found its way to the Atrecht College in Leuven via Nicolaus Ruterius (1442-1509), the Bishop of Arras. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the manuscript became part of the collection of the Major Seminary in Mechelen. Since 1970 it has been preserved in the Theology Facultys Maurits Sabbe Library at KU Leuven. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

The Anjou Bible, now kept in the Theology Faculty's Maurits Sabbe Library of the University of Leuven (Belgium) is a superbly illuminated manuscript created at the Royal Court of Naples in the turbulent fourteenth century. At this time much of Central and Southern Europe was governed by the successful dynasty of Anjou, which continued to expand its territories and encouraged artists and writers like Giotto, Simone Martini, Boccaccio and Petrarch. In 1328, after the death of her father, Joanna of Anjou became the official heir to the prosperous Kingdom of Naples and Sicily. Several years later her grandfather, Robert I, gave Joanna and her young fiance Andrew of Hungary a precious gift, which became known as the Anjou Bible, a manuscript that is priceless from a historical and art-historical point of view. In addition to Bible texts and splendid miniatures, it contains a wealth of historical information about the house of Anjou and the book's origins. One of the artists responsible for the magnificent painting was Cristophorus Orimina, the leading illuminator in Naples, who signed the work. The Anjou Bible has now been carefully conserved and studied: the research findings are brought together in this book. Essays by some of the most noted experts in the field describe how the arts were promoted at the court of Robert I of Anjou and also shed light on the Bible's genesis and on all the research methods and results. This book is richly illustrated and contains all the illuminated folios of the Anjou Bible. 0 g.

On 20 September 2009 the new M-Museum Leuven (Belgium) was inaugurated with the opening of the exhibition Rogier van der Weyden 1400-1464 - Master of Passions. The starting point of the exhibition was the work of Rogier van der Weyden himself and the intention was to display and define his individual style and contribution. To demonstrate the significance of his overwhelming influence across artistic media, his own works were brought together with those of his contemporaries and followers: painters, designers, sculptors, tapestry weavers and embroiderers. His significance was reflected in the international Colloquium Rogier van der Weyden in Context, which took place on 22, 23 and 24 October 2009. It was organised by Illuminare - Centre for the Study of Medieval Art (KU Leuven), the Art History Department KU Leuven and Artes.Leuven, in conjunction with the UCL (Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve, Laboratoire d'etude des oeuvres d'art par les methodes scientifiques) and the KIK-IRPA (Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage, Belgium). It was the XVIIth Symposium for the Study of Underdrawing and Technology in Painting, yet its scope was extended beyond the technical examination of paintings so that the work of one great genius, Rogier van der Weyden, could be considered in a variety of contexts. The papers in this volume are grouped around the following themes: (i) Rogier van der Weyden, painter and designer; (ii) Archival sources; (iii) Studies in painting; (iv) Studies in underdrawing; (v) Studies in sculpture; (vi) The legacy of Van der Weyden. 0 g.

From the 16th to the 19th century, illuminated manuscripts were collected by the great printer-publisher Christophe Plantin and his Moretus successors and descendants. Ranging in date from the 9th to the mid-16th centuries, the manuscripts in the Museum Plantin-Moretus come from all over Europe, chiefly the Southern Netherlands and France with a significant representation of 15th-century Dutch illumination. More surprisingly, about a quarter of the collection comes from England: manuscripts of the 10th to 15th centuries that left the country with Catholic refugees. Alongside the acknowledged masterpieces and rarities, like the Bohemian Bible of 1402, are volumes that have remained virtually unknown, their aesthetic appeal and historical or textual interest often passing unnoticed in the absence of published reproductions. In this beautifully produced catalogue, each of the 102 volumes is illustrated in colour, with more extensive coverage of the 55 volumes with the most rewarding illumination. For the first time it is possible to gauge the extent and nature of this fascinating and under-explored collection, still housed in the building on the Vrijdagmarkt in Antwerp to which Plantin moved his famous sign of the Golden Compasses in 1576. Corpus of Illuminated Manuscripts, 20 - Low Countries Series 15.
