Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book opens the field of linear differential equations to the general reader through a study of the solutions to second-order equations and their transformations. The author focuses on geometric and algebraic tools that began with Leonhard Euler, and that led to the development of group theory and number theory starting about 1800. It is thoroughly demonstrated that there are only two linearly independent solutions to a linear, second-order, ordinary differential equation and that these may be expressed through power series. Asymptotic methods for solutions are presented, and many examples of solutions are worked through in detail to illustrate the theory. The work of mathematicians such as Gauss, Kummer, and Riemann is presented to show how the geometric and algebraic tools were developed and refined over time, and an overview of the extensive subsequent development of research in linear differential equations provides a historical context for the topic. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
