Among Mexico's most colorful churchmen in the early decade of this century was the widely-known and highly-respected Francisco Orozco Y. Jumenez (1864 1936), late Archbishop of Guadalajara. He participated in protests and movements in defense of ecclesiastical interests and against the government during the period of the Mexican Revolution. He was banished five times from his archdiocese. During the height of the Cristero War, he remained hidden and was designated as the leader of the Cristeros. In 1926, the Mexican hierarchy suspended public liturgical services throughout the nation. Many of the bishops, including Jimenez went into exile, most of them in the United States.
