Though born in Germany he was most closely associated with the University of Amsterdam where he became Professor of Zoology, he undertook field expeditions to the Barents Sea and, more extensively, the Ducth East Indies (notably the Siboga Expedition of 1899-1900). This was his major work, the 1st edition being 1904, and 'remained a standard text on the systematics and anatomy of mammals through much of the twentieth century '. E-68; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
