The introduction by Wedderkop is a scathing critique of the time, expressionism and the declining German culture in general, including the disappointing development in Russia which had been observed with high hopes. Amusing how Hermann von Wedderkop, German author and editor of Paul Klee publications and Flechtheim's "Der Querschnitt," repeatedly points to the lack of paper and the high prices for paper being one of the main reasons for the decline of critics and criticism, especially expressionistic world views. As editor he developed a wide audience for Der Querschnitt, some called it the leading German Zeitgeist magazine of the time. He was replaced as editor in chief in 1929 and let go in 1931, with speculators pointing to his enthusiasm for Mussolini who he had met in 1930. Contributors to this editions are Pierre Bonnard, Ferruccio Busoni, Paul Cassirer, Jean Cocteau. Claude Debussy, Hanns Heinz Ewers, Iwan Goll, E. L. Kirchner, Else Lasker-Schüler, Wilhelm Uhde and many others, with illustrations of works by Bonnard, Braque, Chagall, Derain, Alexandra Exter (color), Gris, Guttero, Kirchner, Laurencin, Léger, Macke, Malliol, Molzahn, Edvard Munch, Picasso, Slevogt, de Vlaminck, among others. Illustrated Masereel Ex Libris for Knoll on inside front cover. Text in German. Light wear along edges of binding with light sunning along top of binding. Very light foxing to endpapers and last few pages. Parts of block browned. Binding in overall good+, interior in good to very good condition, original artwork fine.
