[ISBN: 9789087046804].Around 1642, brothers François and Pieter Hemony from Lorraine were commissioned by the Zutphen city council to cast a melodious carillon. Their tower instruments and swinging bells were distinguished by their then unparalleled tonal purity. Their fame spread quickly, and no fewer than fifty city and monastery councils purchased their carillons. They worked alternately in Zutphen, Amsterdam, and Ghent until 1680. Between 1665 and 1667, they cast exclusively cannon. By combining data from primarily municipal sources, which together form almost a company archive, Heleen van der Weel demonstrates that the brothers amassed a substantial fortune. This enabled the second generation to live comfortably without practicing a profession. With the third generation, the Hemony family died out. Naturally, the technical aspects of bell casting are described here, but this book also focuses on "the person behind the bells." The story of these two little-studied testators is placed within its social, cultural, and religious context.…
