hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Missing. No dust jacket, blue cloth boards are lightly soiled, binding sound, foxing to endpages and book edges. The tumultuous history of the City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida from the arrival of Charles Lewis and his family from the Bahamas in 1793, through the Seminole Wars, Civil War, the arrival of Flagler's railroad in late 1890's, the great land boom and bust of the 1920's, the Great Depression, World Wars I and II, the explosive post war growth and up to the modern era of 1955; illustrated with numerous black and white photographs, Appendix, Bibliography, Index. The book measures 7 by 10 inches, 296 pages. Fort Lauderdale was not always the scene of phenomenal growth, lovely accessible beaches, and landscaped waterways. The clouds that hung over the city on many occasions in the past were heavy. Even though the sunshine was bright, it was checkered with troubles and threats to the very existence of the town, which made the dark squares on the checkerboard very black indeed. Courage, hard work, and unwavering faith in the destiny of the city were the hallmarks of the pioneer leaders. One hundred million acres of the richest land this side of the Nile delta; and it's in our back yard!" This was the glowing vision that haunted the imaginations of Fort Lauderdale's pioneer citizens when Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward began his great campaign to drain the Everglades in 1907. It was a glorious picture and land developers quickly began to paint it before potential customers throughout the nation. Thousands of parcels of Everglades land were sold, sight unseen, to Northerners. Many came to Fort Lauderdale for the big "drawing" held by R. J. Bolles and his associates in 1911. They slept in railroad cars pulled up on a siding. A tent city came into being north of the town. Meantime the pioneers were already planning a deep water harbor from which to ship the vast produce that was to "feed the world." But the Everglades didn't drain as planned. The land promotors were indicted by the federal government, and Fort Lauderdale's great place in the destiny of the world faded, along with its new prosperity. In Checkered Sunshine the many illustrations from the early days up to modern times combine with an authentic and absorbing story which will appeal to readers of all ages, interests, and professions.".
