These young "squireens" deprived of occupation by Catholic penal laws, frittered away their useless energies until they met Catherine and Ann Kennedy, heiresses to a fortune wrested from the miserable Irish peasants. Then idleness bred mischief and mischief misfortune. Their breathless course from danger to disaster involved the quartet with curious characters of the times - "couple-beggars", Whiteboys, the agrarian Klansmen who meted out the wild justice of self-redress, swaggering bucks and brawling duellists. When John Scott, the bullying careerist Attorney-General, appears on the scene, the story of Byrne and Strange reaches its ironic and macabre denouement. The is copy is very good in black cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Ex-library with a call number label on the lower jacket spine and library stamps and notations on the ffep, but no other indications of library use. Binding is quite sound and the text is otherwise clean and unmarked. The unclipped DJ has been in a protective plastic sleeve and so is quite undamaged. FO22.
