In einer konstruktiven Erweiterung historisch-kritischer Methodik zielt die Interpretation (Verstehen) darauf, diese Erzählung als bedeutungsvolle Geschichte und deren existentielle Funktion wahrzunehmen. So kann die Autorin neue Erkenntnisse gegenüber bisherigen Exegesen präsentieren, die von einer Esau-Konzentration und dessen negativer Einschätzung absehen.
