Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Poor. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xviii, [2], 314, [2] pages. Illustrations. The dust jacket is worn, torn, chipped, and soiled. Inscribed on the title page by the author. The inscription reads To Franklin Fox with affection and best wishes. Lewis H. Weinstein 1991. Foreword by Abram L. Sachar. Appendix: Rhymes and Poetry. A Memoir by the Lithuanian immigrant who became a lawyer, served as liaison between General Dwight D. Eisenhower and General Charles DeGaulle during World War II. Lewis H. Weinstein was a retired lawyer and advocate of Jewish causes. A prominent litigator and senior partner, he retired from Foley, Hoag & Eliot in 1993 after nearly 50 years with the firm. He often took part in continuing legal-education programs and formerly taught trial practice at Harvard Law School as well as a graduate course in the laws of land-use planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Weinstein, who was born in Lithuania, was brought to this country as an infant. He graduated as a member of Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard College and, in 1930, from Harvard Law School. In the 1930's he was in private practice in Boston and served as assistant city corporation counsel and general counsel of the Boston Housing Authority. In the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations, he served on the White House Executive Committee on Equal Opportunity in Housing. Mr. Weinstein was a past president of Hebrew College, now in Brookline, Mass., and a backer of groups like the National Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and the Council of Jewish Federations. Derived from a Kirkus review: Weinstein recounts his life as a young immigrant, a student at Harvard Law School, a liaison officer between Eisenhower and de Gaulle, a community activist, and a "friend" of famous men like John F. Kennedy. The most arresting segment of this memoir involves Weinstein's activities during WW II. General Eisenhower visits Ohrdruf, a miniature version of the nearby death camp of Buchenwald only because Weinstein was "persistent as hell" (in Ike's words). Eisenhower vomits from what he sees and smells, but thanks his liaison officer for the education. The future leader of the Free World can only raise his finger to his lips when Weinstein pleads with him to bomb the railway tracks leading to the remaining death camps. Pre- and post-war, however, we have the record of a bright, hard-working Jewish community leader and advocate of American civil rights and worldwide human rights who wants to be remembered as such. After the photos and before the poetic appendix comes a quote from the Talmudic sage Hillel that serves well as the author's writing and publishing credo: "If I cannot be for myself, who is for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, when?" An interesting autobiography, which will be of interest to historians.…
