Profound changes have taken place in the material conditions of the Bedouin in the past few decades. Many have settled in houses in the towns, and those who still roam the deserts in their tents herding livestock have replaced many of their traditional artefacts with products of the modern industrial world. Focusing mainly on the Bedouin of south Jordan, this book describes the objects which the Bedouin formerly made for themselves or bought from local craftsmen. Special emphasis is placed on the things the Bedouin made from the skins, hair and wool of their animals. The most important of these were their goat-hair tents, and the most decorative the colorful woven textiles they made to adorn their camels and their homes. Shelagh Weir is an anthropologist in the Museum of Mankind at the British Museum, where she is responsible for the Middle Eastern collections. Her publications ? include Spinning and Weaving in Palestine (1970), Qat in Yemen: Consumption and Social Change (1985), Palestinian Embroidery (with Serene Shahid 1988) and Palestinian Costume (1989). With 13 color, 85 black-and-white illustrations and drawings.
