The book examines the integration of these 'privileged' immigrants in relation to the experiences of other minority groups (e.g. labor migrants, Palestinians).This volume offers rich empirical and theoretical material involving historical developments, demographic changes, sociological problems, anthropological insights, and political implications. Focusing on the three dimensions of citizenship: sovereignty and control, the allocation of social and political rights, and questions of national self-understanding, the essays bring to light the elements that are distinctive for either society but also point to similarities that owe as much to nation-specific characteristics as to evolving patterns of global migration.

Die heute verdrängte arabische Präsenz in der Stadt Haifa wird in den Erinnerungen der dort angesiedelten Juden aus Marokko lebendig und verschränkt die Gründung Israels mit Bevölkerungstransfer, Vertreibung und ethnosozialen Konflikten. 1959 begehrten…die jüdisch-marokkanischen Bewohner des Stadtteils Wadi Salib gegen ihre teilweise erbärmlichen Lebensbedingungen auf. Es kam zu gewalttätigen Protesten, weshalb die israelischen Behörden das Viertel räumten. Bis heute ist es als Ruinenstätte inmitten Haifas zu erkennen. Hinter diesem bekannten Teil der Geschichte verbirgt sich ein bis heute verdrängter: tatsächlich war Wadi Salib bis zum Jahr 1948 ein intaktes arabisches Wohnviertel, aus dem die arabischen Einwohner im Zuge des Krieges zwischen Arabern und Juden flüchteten oder vertrieben wurden. Yfaat Weiss erzählt mehr als die Geschichte eines Stadtviertels und seiner Bewohner. Das Buch handelt ebenso von der Nationswerdung Israels, verbunden mit der Vertreibung und dem Transfer von Menschen im Kontext der dramatischen Ereignisse des 20. Jahrhunderts.
