Friedrich Weissensteiner (b. 1927), Austrian historian and author of numerous Habsburg biographies, here presents the lives of Maria Theresia's eight surviving daughters. Far from being mere dynastic pawns, Maria Anna, Marie Christine, Maria Elisabeth, Maria Amalia, Johanna Gabriele, Maria Josepha, Maria Carolina, and Marie Antoinette are shown as individual women with sharply divergent destinies - ranging from tragic early deaths and unhappy marriages to powerful queenship and even martyrdom under the guillotine. Illustrated with portraits, engravings, and historical images. [From jacket flaps] Unter den sechzehn Kindern Maria Theresias waren elf Toechter, von denen drei das Kleinkindalter nicht ueberlebten; den uebrigen acht ist dieses Buch gewidmet. Sie alle waren der Mutter innig verbunden; aber die Umstaende und die Position ihrer Familie brachten es mit sich, dass sie auch als Schachfiguren im dynastischen Spiel dienen mussten. Politisch vorteilhafte Eheschliessungen konnten den Einfluss des Hauses Habsburg ausdehnen und seine Macht staerken. An Ruecksicht auf Herzensbindungen und eine freie Entscheidung ueber den eigenen Lebensweg war unter solchen Umstaenden nicht zu denken. Aber trotzdem war es einigen dieser Frauen moeglich, ihre Begabungen zu pflegen und zu nuetzen und ein erfuelltes Leben zu fuehren. Es gab viel Tragik im Leben der Toechter Maria Theresias: am bekanntesten ist sicher das Schicksal Marie-Antoinettes, Gemahlin Ludwigs XVI. von Frankreich, die als "Buergerin Capet" unter der Guillotine starb. Auch Maria Amalia, im Gegensatz zu Marie Antoinette politisch begabt, wurde der Heiratspolitik geopfert und musste statt dem Mann ihrer Wahl den bigotten und unintelligenten Herzog von Parma heiraten, mit dem sie 33 Jahre in ungluecklicher Ehe verbunden war. Ihre aeltere Schwester Maria Elisabeth, die an Schoenheit der Mutter nicht nachstand, wurde durch eine Pockenerkrankung entstellt und endete schliesslich als Aebtissin in Innsbruck, die ob ihrer scharfen Zunge gefuerchtet war. Johanna Gabriele und Maria Josepha wurden nur zwoelf bzw. sechzehn Jahre alt. Maria Josepha starb kurz vor ihrer Hochzeit an den Pocken; ihre ein Jahr juengere Schwester Marie Charlotte "erbte" schliesslich den Braeutigam, Ferdinand III. von Sizilien, und wurde als Maria Carolina Koenigin von Neapel-Sizilien. Durch Napoleon vom Thron vertrieben, fuehrte sie ein ruheloses Leben und starb schliesslich 1813 in ihrer Heimatstadt. Aber es gab auch Schwestern, denen mehr Glueck beschieden war. Marie Christine, schoen und kuenstlerisch begabt, fand in einer Liebesehe mit Herzog Albert von Sachsen-Teschen Erfuellung. Und Maria Anna, die Aelteste, fuehrte trotz ihrer koerperlichen Behinderung in Klagenfurt ein reiches, ganz der Wissenschaft gewidmetes Leben, umgeben von einem Kreis von Dichtern und Gelehrten. Vielleicht ist es gerade diese bescheiden und zurueckgezogen lebende Tochter der Kaiserin, der das liebevollste Gedenken zuteil wurde.
